NEHAWU Limpopo Mourns The Passing Of Peter Nchabeleng Regional Treasurer, Comrade Lotanang Kganane

Monday August 29, 2022

The National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union [NEHAWU] in Limpopo has learnt with great sadness the passing of Peter Nchabeleng Regional Treasurer, Comrade Lotanang Kganane. Comrade Kganane passed on Friday 26th August 2022 due to ill health.

NEHAWU is deeply saddened by her death and conveys its deep and heartfelt condolences to her family, friends and comrades in the Mass Democratic Movement (MDM). We wish her family strength and courage during this difficult moment.

Her passing is not only a loss to the union but workers in general, especially at this critical moment when the government has embarked on an agenda of weakening collective bargaining and reversing the gains and rights of workers. Comrade Kganane dedicated her life in championing the interest of workers, fighting for better conditions of service and defending the gains of workers against a brutal system of exploitation.

Comrade Lotanang Kganane joined NEHAWU in 2010 soon after her appointment on the 1st of September attached to Burgersfort Department of Social Development. In 2015, she became a shopsteward representing social work services in Shocky Magopane branch. She was later elected as a Regional Coordinator of Social Auxiliary Workers until her election as the Regional Treasurer in the 2019 Regional Congress.

She was also elected as the Coordinator of Young Workers in COSATU Tubatse Local and also served as Deputy Chairperson of Young Communist League of South Africa in Phandelani Ramagoma District (Sekhukhune). Cde Lotanang was also part of the ANCYL in Fetakgomo Tubatse sub-region.

In her honour, NEHAWU will intensify the struggle to end all forms of exploitation of workers both young and old by employers. Death has robbed us of an outstanding leader of the working class who served the union and workers with distinction. The union and its members are poorer without her. May her soul Rest in Peace. END
